# CardScan Business Card Scanning SDK obsolescence

Review the CardScan SDK discontinuation and replacement scanning options.

**March 2023. All regions.** All CardScan Business Card Scanning products have been discontinued and are outside their extended technical support period.

The CardScan SDK is used in the **Visitor Management client (VMC) and VM Kiosk**. It allows a connected CardScan device to scan business cards and auto-populate visitor fields: phone, address, mobile, email, company. The CardScan drivers are **not installed for sites running the CAPSS licence**.

## Who is affected

* Sites using CardScan Business Card Scanning who upgrade to the future Command Centre version where the SDK is removed **lose the card scanning functionality**.
* Sites **not** running Visitor Management: no action required.
* Sites running Visitor Management **without** CardScan scanning: no action required.

## Alternatives

There are no replacement options from CardScan, and CardScan hardware is no longer available from the vendor. VMC and Kiosk support other APIs for business-card scanning devices (**Acuant**). Contact your local Gallagher representative for a replacement product.

## Licensing

CardScan drivers with Command Centre will not be available for purchase. Existing implementations may only work with CardScan **8.0.5**. There are no supported CardScan licences.

## Support

CardScan products are discontinued and no longer supported by the manufacturer. Gallagher will drop official support for CardScan devices in future Command Centre versions.

## CardScan product advice, from CardScan

Their FAQ recommends it should only be possible to use version 9 or later of the CardScan software after some trial period. CardScan suggests version 8.0.5 can be used with a licence to continue using CardScan hardware.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.security.gallagher.com/knowledge-hub/products/product-advisories/historical-notices/obsolescence-notice-cardscan-business.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
