# Incoming email and SMS deprecation — September 2022

Review the 2022 Exchange Online change affecting inbound Command Centre messages.

Microsoft permanently disabled **basic authentication** in all Exchange Online/Office 365 tenants from **1 October 2022**.

This functionality enables inputs *into* Command Centre from email and SMS, for example acknowledging an alarm by replying to a notification. Microsoft's discontinuation means **Command Centre can no longer process inbound email or SMS messages from 1 October 2022** for customers using Exchange Online/Office 365.

## What this means

* **Outbound** email and SMS notifications from Command Centre are **unaffected**.
* Users not acknowledging alarms via this platform are unaffected and need take no action.
* Recommended alternative: **Command Centre Mobile**, which gives push notifications with event details and immediate action. **All Command Centre licences include one free Command Centre Mobile licence.** Additional licences can be purchased through your Channel Partner.
* Gallagher intends to deprecate alarm acknowledgement by inbound email and SMS **regardless of the email or SMS service used** in a future release of Command Centre.

## Frequently asked questions

Preserved from the source advisory:

* Microsoft Exchange **on-premise** users are unaffected.
* Other email services, for example Google Gmail, are **not** impacted. This applies only to Microsoft Exchange Online/Office 365.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.security.gallagher.com/knowledge-hub/products/product-advisories/historical-notices/deprecation-of-incoming-email-and-sms.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
