# Active Directory Sync features and functions

Understand Active Directory Sync generations, cardholder replication, and filter behavior.

AD Sync provides **bidirectional cardholder replication** between Microsoft Active Directory and Command Centre, automating onboarding, offboarding, and role changes.

There are **two generations**, configured very differently:

* **v8.40 and below (legacy):** an XML-configured, certificate-secured architecture using the **FT Active Directory Sync Service**, a Control App, a Diagnostic client, and a Web Service server (default **port 8050**). See [Sync Checklist (v8.40 and below)](/knowledge-hub/products/cc-software/configure/identity-solutions-cardholders-and-ope/active-directory/active-directory-sync-checklist-v8-40.md).
* **v8.50 and above (current):** rebuilt on the **REST API**, forward-compatible with all later CC versions, and using AD Single Sign-On to authorize the config UI. The service is renamed **Gallagher Active Directory Sync Service**. See [Sync v8.50 - What's new](/knowledge-hub/products/cc-software/configure/identity-solutions-cardholders-and-ope/active-directory/active-directory-sync-v8-50-what-s-new.md).

Supported CC versions: v8.20, v8.30, v8.40, v8.50+, v8.90, v9.00, v9.10+.

## How filtering works

* AD user accounts are processed against the **Cardholder Filter(s)** configured in a **Replication Group**. Multiple filters can exist on one group; all are checked against every AD user in a valid container.

* **When a cardholder is not in AD** (global): choose **Leave in Command Centre**, **Deauthorise in Command Centre**, or **Remove from Command Centre**.
* **When a cardholder is not in Valid Groups** (but is within the Valid Container): a separate action. If a cardholder is in neither the Valid Container nor the Valid Groups, they fall under the "not in AD" rule.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.security.gallagher.com/knowledge-hub/products/cc-software/configure/identity-solutions-cardholders-and-ope/active-directory/active-directory-sync-features-and-fun.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
