# Legacy readers

Reference discontinued Gallagher reader variants, communication protocols, and current support status.

{% hint style="danger" %}
**Legacy hardware:** Do not specify these readers for new installations. Use current T-Series hardware for replacement projects.
{% endhint %}

Prior to the T-Series readers, Gallagher had **CardaxIV** model readers. These are **no longer supported or available**.

### Protocol support status

Gallagher has produced many readers in the past using the **Cardax IV**, **Local Bus**, and **Wiegand** protocols. Of these:

<table><thead><tr><th width="132.60003662109375">Protocol</th><th>Current support status</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>CardaxIV</strong></td><td>Supported via the 4R and 8R plugin module. Can also be connected to a Wiegand Protocol Converter.</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Local Bus</strong></td><td>No longer supported. Used to be compatible to legacy controllers (5000, 5000GL)</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Wiegand</strong></td><td>Legacy reader variants no longer sold. Wiegand integration is supported via Wiegand-capable hardware (4R/8R plug-in modules, 4 In 2 Out Door Module Wiegand variant and Wiegand protocol converter). See <a href="/knowledge-hub/products/integrations/third-party-readers/wiegand/t-series-wiegand-troubleshooting-intro.md">T-Series - Wiegand Troubleshooting Introduction</a>.</td></tr></tbody></table>

### Variants

⚠️ **The below variants are no longer supported or provided by Gallagher Security.** Any site still running legacy (e.g. Local Bus readers) should plan for upgrade Command Centre and relevant hardware to current T-Series readers.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.security.gallagher.com/knowledge-hub/products/cc-hardware/readers/legacy-readers.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
