# Legacy Credentials

Legacy credential technologies are access credential technologies that have been retired, or should be, because their security is very low against modern attacks. They are kept here for backwards compatibility. Do not use them on new installations.

{% hint style="danger" %}
**Legacy technology:** Do not specify these credentials for new installations. Plan migration to MIFARE Plus or DESFire for existing sites.
{% endhint %}

## MIFARE Classic

MIFARE Classic is still supported by Command Centre and by modern T-series readers, but Gallagher strongly encourages sites to stop using it.

The Classic encryption cipher was compromised in 2007 and 2008, and better attack methods were published in 2009. Free Android apps can clone Classic credentials in seconds.

**Migration path.** Move to MIFARE Plus or DESFire. DESFire is the suggested technology, because it is more flexible and costs about the same.

## Tiris

Tiris is an early generation 125 kHz RFID technology. It is incompatible with the 125 kHz capable T-series Gallagher readers.

The cards are no longer manufactured or available, because their security is very poor by modern standards. Do not use them.

## MAG Stripe

MAG Stripe uses the magnetic stripe on the side of a plastic card, encoded with cardholder data, typically just a card number, and read with a magnetic card swipe reader.

Gallagher no longer manufactures any reader that supports reading Mag Stripe data. The encryption is so weak that it is not considered secure. Do not use it.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.security.gallagher.com/knowledge-hub/products/cc-hardware/credentials/legacy-credentials.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
