# Wiring Outputs

[Compliance & Reference](broken://pages/xT7N7IT3BP4gxJvnsCrN) › [Wiring Basics](/knowledge-hub/deployment-resources/install-and-commission/wiring-basics.md) › Wiring Outputs

## This page answers

* What is an output?
* What are the voltage and current limits?
* What do I do if I need to switch a higher load?
* Do the relays provide power?

How outputs work with Gallagher hardware, and their limitations.

## What is an output?

A physical output can be:

* Sirens
* Door control
* Control for lighting
* Warning buzzer
* Almost anything Gallagher needs to control can be an output

An output in Gallagher is (typically) a **physical relay** on a Gallagher device capable of interrupting or completing an electrical circuit.

## Are there limits on the outputs?

Yes. Outputs have a maximum voltage and current they can switch. This depends on the device in question, so **always refer to the install notes for the hardware in use**.

Typically the limits are:

| Limit        | Value                                                                   |
| ------------ | ----------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Voltage      | 24 VDC/AC                                                               |
| Current load | 3 A resistive, 1 A inductive (**2 A resistive on the Plug In modules**) |

> ⚠️ **Do not** try to switch voltages higher than 24 volts (AC or DC), or a load (current draw) of over 3 amps resistive or 1 amp inductive.

## What if I need to switch loads that are higher than the limits?

If you need to switch loads that are higher than these limits, install another higher rated relay that is capable of switching those loads, and **drive that relay with the Gallagher relay**.

## Do the relays provide power?

**No.** They are essentially clean contacts.

The Plug In modules do have the means to have power supplied to the common of the relays. All other relays are electrically clean and isolated from all electronic circuits.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.security.gallagher.com/knowledge-hub/deployment-resources/install-and-commission/wiring-basics/wiring-outputs.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
